Can You Spare A Toonie?
Vancouver, BC – Monica Donetti-Ross & Delores Root will be joining an estimated 2,000 people in Vancouver to walk in “The Weekend to End Breast Cancer” from August 20-22, 2004. Monica & Delores are gearing up now to raise $4000 and training to walk 60 kilometers as the Sutton Group – West Coast White Rock Team!
As Realtors with Sutton Group – West Coast Realty, White Rock, Monica & Delores were able to enlist colleagues at their office to assist them with spreading the word and donating pledges.”Our office is behind us 100%” Monica & Delores enthuses. “I would really like to see the rest of the real estate community get involved!”
If every realtor takes on Monica & Delores’s challenge and donates a toonie they expect to be one of the top fundraising walkers! Monica adds, “people can certainly give more than a toonie and tax receipts will be given out for donations of $20 or more.” Monica & Delores are also planning a very creative fundraising project. They will be selling advertising space on their t-shirts which they will wear on the 60 km weekend.
Monica’s reason for participating in the walk stems from her concern for the many people who have been affected by breast cancer. She also had a scare with the disease herself when she was younger. “Breast cancer affects everyone directly or indirectly, male or female,” she notes. In fact, one of every nine Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives, according to the BC Cancer Agency. Proceeds of the weekend to end breast cancer in Vancouver will benefit the BC Cancer Foundation.
Delores Root is committed to this event because the cause is one that she, as a woman, feels is an important one. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women between the ages of 35 and 55 and, this year, an estimated 20,000 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and over 5,000 women will die from it.
Monica & Delores know the 60 km walk will be physical challenge but it is also an opportunity to test their inner strength for an important cause. Monica jokes “perhaps I don’t know what I am getting into, 60 km in 2 days, I may have to be taken away by ambulance,” “but I have to try. Someone has to light the torch that can be passed on and lead more people to get involved in this worthy event.”
The first “Weekend to End Breast Cancer” was held September 19 to 21, 2003 and Sutton Group – Estates (2000) Ltd. broker Jennifer Schultz Burton made the 60km walk through the streets of Toronto through snow and rain.
