Surrey, BC – Larry Anderson of Sutton – Premier Realty is happy to dedicate time every week to coach a wheelchair basketball team.   His participation helps many people with physical challenges to get out and enjoy a rousing game which was once restricted to able-bodied players.

In fact, Anderson’s team is not only having a good time, they are impressive basketball players.   Anderson recently outfitted his team in Sutton hats and shirts when they were invited to a provincial tournament.   Anderson’s involvement has a personal dimension; his daughter Emily, who is 11-years-old, has spina bifida.

Spina bifida is the most common permanent disabling birth defect.   Spina bifida occurs when the spinal column doesn’t close completely during the first month of pregnancy. There are 60 million women at risk of having a baby born with spina bifida (Source: Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Canada).

Effects include full or partial paralysis, bladder and bowel control difficulties, learning disabilities, depression, etc. But thanks to new treatments and technology, people suffering from spina bifida can enjoy many of the things that able-bodied people take for granted.

We would like to thank Larry Anderson for his time and effort in aiding the wheelchair basketball team, showing true Sutton Spirit!
