Sutton Agent’s Fashion Show and the local community Raise $4,000 for MLD Patient

Orangeville, Ontario - On November 1, 2005, Sales Associate Dianne Zahodnik of Sutton Group – Professional Realty Inc., presented Sue and Brad Bolton with a cheque for $4,000. The amount will help with medical expenses for the Bolton’s 10-year-old daughter, Kaitlin, who is fighting Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD). Kaitlin’s medical costs are not covered under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), and the Boltons require $50,000-70,000 annually for Kaitlin’s treatment in the USA.

“Fifty to seventy thousand dollars per year for medical expenses is horrendous to anyone,” says Dianne. She and her daughter Jennifer put on a fashion show on November 20, which raised $3,510 for the Bolton family. “We started planning a family fashion show last August. We had Santa visit and Celtic Dancers. Everyone had a good time.” The Orangeville Lions Club donated an additional $500. Dianne is hoping to coordinate another fundraiser in the spring by selling teddy bears.

MLD is one of a group of leukodystrophy genetic disorders in which cells in the nervous system, liver, and kidneys are affected. Infants and children with the disease begin to display symptoms such as muscle wasting and weakness, developmental delays, progressive loss of vision leading to blindness, convulsions, impaired swallowing and paralysis. There is no cure for MLD, only treatments for symptoms and in some cases, bone marrow transplantation to delay the progression of the disease. There are currently seven children in Ontario, including Kaitlin, whose medical treatments are not covered under the OHIP.
