Victoria, B. C - Martial artists from around the world are preparing for the World Martial Arts Games, held on the weekend of August 18, 19, and 20 at the Bear Mountain Arena. Brian Niles from Sutton Group – Westcan Realty is the volunteer coordinator for this event and with martial artists coming from over 33 nations, this competition promises to be one of Victoria’s highlights this summer.

Brian has spent countless hours preparing for the debut of the games but he loved every minute of it. He reveals that the goal of the World Martial Arts Games is to unite martial artists from all different disciplines, “rather than staying in this fragmented state, we want to create [with the World Martial Arts Games] a unified environment of competition that would foster friendship, camaraderie, and a sense of fair play. It would also have a very inclusive atmosphere”. He believes that this event would also be a nice retreat for many of the athletes coming from nations suffering from civil unrest.

Brian became involved with the World Martial Arts Games through Ken Marchtaler, the Chairman for this event. Ken is the Sensei of OMAC Martial Arts, a club that Brian’s two children currently attend. Besides devoting his time to the World Martial Arts Games, Brian has a long history of contributing to his community. He was the founder and former executive director to the Saanich Legacy Foundation from 1998 to 2005; over $200,000 was raised in support of parks and youth related courses. Brian is also contributing a portion of his commission to the Mulli Children’s Family Home. This organization is based in Kenya and is directed towards helping orphaned children find foster homes.
