Burnaby, BC – On May 27, 2007, Azim Jina of Sutton – Centre Realty, along with over 10,000 other generous individuals will participate in the World Partnership Walk. The 7 km walk will take place in Stanley Park in beautiful Vancouver, BC. Known as Canada’s largest annual event, the World Partnership Walk is devoted to raising funds and increasing awareness to fight global poverty. This free event will not only take place in Vancouver, but also in eight other cities across Canada. 100% of funds raised will go directly towards programs in Asia and Africa.
Azim is very passionate about putting an end to global poverty. “I have participated in the walk for 12 years now”, shared Azim. “There is so much poverty out there; I believe it’s very important to help third world countries. We are so fortunate here in Canada”. The walk took 6 months of preparation and Azim has put in countless volunteer hours as the walk captain for the Tri-City Mosque.
Beginning 23 years ago, The World Partnership Walk is an initiative of Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC). Azim also helps fundraise for this foundation, which is a non-denominational, registered Canadian charity with a mandate of providing long-lasting solutions to the challenges of global poverty. Last year, the walk in Vancouver raised $1.6 million and this year they are hoping to surpass last year’s goal. Funds are raised through individuals collecting donations, corporate sponsors, and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) which matches every dollar raised for the walk.
Opening ceremonies and warm up will be from 11:00am to 11:30am. The guest of honour for the opening ceremonies will be University of British Columbia President Professor Stephen J. Toope, who will be joined by the Premier of British Columbia, Gordon Campbell, as well as Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan. The walk will commence at 11:30am at Lumberman’s Arch in Stanley Park. Everyone will meet back at the starting location at 12:30pm for festivities and a barbeque. There will be entertainment from around the world and a variety of ethnic foods to savour. Prizes will also be awarded to those who have raised over $100 in donations.
