Sutton Office Delivers Hope and Happiness All Year Long

Calgary, AB – Through good times and bad, the spirit of giving is alive and well at Sutton Group – Canwest. Each week, the REALTORS® and Broker Helen Milton contribute two dollars each to a 50/50 draw. With 105 REALTORS® in the office, this generous group of people donate several thousands of dollars each year to charities. Some of the money is also set aside for their Christmas fund. This past December, four Calgary-area families were the recipients of their generosity. With Santa’s ‘sled’ piled high, REALTORS® Scott Weber and Tammie Dowd delivered brightly wrapped boxes of clothing and toys and enough food for a feast to one of these families: a single mother and her two daughters.

“Our mom cried when we arrived with all those gifts; she was overwhelmed and her daughters were thrilled!” says Tammie, who notes that the tree, ornaments and even some of the furniture were donated by fellow Sutton Group – Canwest REALTORS® as well as clients and friends.

“The generosity of the people in our office is just amazing,” says Mary Matichuk, the Office Administrator. “Before Christmas, the donations just poured in! The toys, new and used clothing, and food were piled practically to the ceiling in one of our offices.”

Once the four families were selected, the REALTORS® were assigned to a family and given the ages of the children and their wish lists. The head of most households was a single mother. One woman was caring for four children ages two to 17. Another mother had twin 7-year-old daughters. The REALTORS® did their best to make the holidays happy for this diverse group. “A 10-year-old boy with autism had a very specific request: blue cat slippers,’ says Mary. “We looked everywhere and although we never found blue cat slippers, we found a housecoat and blue slippers so he was happy.” In addition to the children’s wish lists, they also donated household supplies, food, and grocery store gift cards so that families could purchase perishable items such as turkey.

“At Sutton Group – Canwest, we have a special team,” says Broker Helen Milton, who has 18 years of experience at Sutton. “In addition to helping the adopted families during the holidays, we also collected 15 bags of women and children’s clothing for the Women in Need Society and 20 bags of adult clothing for the Mustard Seed. Over the years, through the weekly contributions, we have helped several charities. It is wonderful to know that one small group of caring individuals can make a real difference in a community.”
