Sutton REALTOR® Delivers Gifts of Joy and Wonderful Memories

Calgary, AB – Each Christmas for many years, Bob Metcalf, a REALTOR® at Sutton – Partners Realty Group, has performed a special job requiring two key skills: being jolly and looking the part of Santa in a beard and fuzzy red suit. It’s a role that he relishes. Through the years, Bob has heard countless wishes and passed out a mountain of gifts to children and adults. He often played Santa for holiday events at the long-term care facility where he worked. One day, 14-years-ago, a co-worker who was a Stampede Princess asked him to be Santa at their annual party for children with special needs. Bob was happy to help and has done so each Christmas since.

“It’s a humbling experience when I see the children’s joy and expectation,” says Bob. “Some of them are very nervous about approaching this strangely dressed person; some are very eager to share their special wishes with old St. Nick. This year a young girl who loved Santa, came up to me with the current Stampede Queen as her support and asked for a skipping rope, and that was all she wanted. She then whispered something to the Queen, smiled as she had her photo taken and left. The Queen came to me afterward to share the other things she wanted, but knew Santa would only bring one gift, and she really wanted the skipping rope. Why do I take a day to so this? The smiles, the hugs, the memories I receive and I’m sure I pass on to others, who with their physical and mental limitations may have few others in their life.”

Playing Santa is just one of Bob’s many volunteer projects. When a family friend with diabetes mentioned that the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation needed help with their annual golf tournament, Bob again stepped forward. For the past three years, as chair of the committee to host the event, he has given many hours to plan all aspects of the event then coordinate volunteers on the day of the tournament. This season, Bob will be helping to coordinate the fundraising tournament hosted by Sutton – Partners Realty Group.

Other volunteer projects include escorting residents from the Dr. Vernon Fanning Centre to Calgary Flames games each month and donating to the Calgary Herald Christmas Fund in lieu of mailing calendars to clients.
