Parksville, BCWhen Dan Jack moved to Parksville a decade ago, he quickly made it feel like home by volunteering with three organizations and joining Sutton Group – Whitecap Realty.  On February 25, 2010, he received a REALTORS Care® Award from the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board for his efforts.  Dan was selected from nearly 200 REALTORS® in his zone.  This was his first time receiving this award and he says, “Winning the REALTORS Care® Award is an honour although I didn’t expect anything when I began volunteering—except to help out and do things I enjoy.”

For eight years, Dan has been volunteering with the Oceanside Generals Junior B Hockey Club, making him one of the longest standing Directors at the organization.  This community-owned club is the highest level of hockey offered in the Parksville area.  From April 1 to 4, 2010, the Oceanside Generals will host the Cyclone Taylor Cup Provincial Junior B Championships.  “The event should generate more than $1 million for the community and we’ll see some great hockey by the best teams in B.C,” says Dan.  He manages security at home games and will also supervise security at the Cyclone Taylor Cup.

He finds it rewarding to be part of an organization that fosters skills development and teamwork for young hockey players.  “It’s great to see that each year we have about four players who are talented enough to receive scholarships to colleges and universities and have the opportunity to play at higher levels.”

Dan has also volunteered with the Vancouver Island chapter of the Association of Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) for the past several years.  A.I.M. is a non-profit society serving more than 220,000 motorcyclists across B.C.  When members are injured, A.I.M. provides moral, financial and legal support and also works to educate the public about safe road sharing.  As a Harley owner for three decades, Dan was happy to take an active role in the association.  He became Vice-President then an Area Director (a role he currently maintains).  He also volunteers at their annual motorcycle rodeo and camping event, which features bands, vendors, a beer garden and the Pig and Fin feast.  The event typically raises $20,000 each year to help fund their programs.

Dan’s third passion is boating and sailing.  From 2002 to early 2009, Dan volunteered with the Ballenas Power and Sail Squadron, whose mandate is to teach boating safety.  One of his roles was Communications Officer.  In this role, Dan advised approximately 200 members of changes in training courses, water safety rules and social events.
