Decades of Volunteer Work Improves and Saves Lives
Whistler, BC – This holiday season, Peter Dagg, a REALTOR® with Sutton Group – West Coast Realty in Whistler, received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV). The certificate recognized his teamwork on the recent Christmas Classic Fundraiser, which raised $6,200 for the Lookout Emergency Aid Society, a charity that assists homeless people. This is one example of his community and professional contributions spanning decades.
One winter day, when ski patrol dispatch radioed for medical assistance, Peter grabbed his patrol pack and rushed to assist. “On arrival, the patient was unresponsive and another medical technician was on the scene,” recalls Peter. “We started CPR and after a while the patient was resuscitated. Then the Advanced Life Support team arrived to treat, assist and transport the patient to the hospital, after which he fully recovered.”
As a volunteer ski patroller for the past 22 years, Peter has provided assistance to injured skiers and snowboarders. Over the years, he has received two Purple Stars from the National Ski Patrol for saving two lives. A thank-you note from one of those survivors reminds him of why he devotes so much time to patrolling the hills and retraining annually.
His volunteer work doesn’t end when the ski runs close. In June, Peter took part in the 260-kilometer Ride to Conquer Cancer, which benefits the BC Cancer Foundation. He joined 2,700 other riders on the two-day journey from Vancouver to Seattle. Despite the effort involved in raising more than $3,000, training and riding, Peter has registered for the 2012 event noting: “It’s a great challenge and a great cause!”
Bicycles for Humanity (BFH) is another cause close to his heart. “BFH is a grassroots organization with many chapters that collect, pack and ship used bicycles to Africa. Bicycles are the mainstay transport for many people. They are an affordable way to haul everything from firewood to livestock. Even the shipping containers get converted into bike repair shops. I have been involved in Whistler for three years, helping to collect and pack bikes.”
When he was elected Director in the NSS Division of REBGV in February 2011, Peter felt he could forge an important connection between Whistler/Sea-to-Sky and the rest of the REBGV membership. In addition to projects such as the Christmas fundraiser, he is involved in educational and informational workshops and professional development for his electorate.
