Kingston, ON – One young family left behind the corruption and conflict of Eritrea, a tiny country near the Horn of Africa, to take refuge in Sudanese camps. They joined thousands of other people struggling to survive in harrowing conditions with inadequate food, water and shelter. For many, these camps will be the only home they know for the indefinite future.

The congregation of the Westside Fellowship Christian Reformed Church, including Ryan and Gail Power, is helping to make the world a more hopeful place, one family at a time.

Bringing three refugees (mother, father and their two-year-old son) to Canada, helping them find work, learn English and providing them with several months of food, shelter and clothing will cost approximately $15,000. The group has raised $5,700 toward this target and have learned that the family will arrive within the next two weeks.

Gail and Ryan invite the public to participate in these upcoming fundraisers:

• Golf Tournament for Friends of Refugees: The tournament is set for Saturday, September 5th at 10 a.m. at the Landings. Golfers, hole sponsors ($100) and silent auction items are needed. Please email • Garage Sale for Friends of Refugees: The sale runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 12th at 1021 Woodbine Road. To donate, please visit: • Ride for Refuge: On October 3, 2015, Canadians in many communities including Kingston can enjoy a community bike ride to assist refugees. Register online at
• Bake sale: Get your Christmas baking done the easy way! Watch the group’s Facebook page (above) for details of the bake sale and other upcoming events.

Ryan and Gail recently held a very successful movie night fundraiser. Eschewing a $350 city permit to hold the event in a public venue, the couple cleared out the furniture from the lower level of their home to make room for 38 guests and raised $4,200!

Working with dedicated citizens, the Canadian government approves refugees, arranges travel visas and flights and contributes approximately 40 percent of the living expenses.
