Alberta in the Spotlight
Alberta – Do you have a knack for brightening a room with a kind word and a smile? Do you wish to improve the lives of neighbours in need or abandoned animals? If you have as little as two hours to spare, you can volunteer for a cause that interests you and make a real difference. Chances are you’ll also have some fun and meet new people. In the spotlight this week are some of the many charities/non-profit organizations urgently in need of volunteers in Alberta.
Motor vehicle accidents are a common reason why our medical system requires a steady supply of blood donations. By volunteering for just a few hours at a blood drive, you can help to save a life. To learn more about opportunities with Canadian Blood Services visit https://www.blood.ca/en/ways-donate/volunteering/become-volunteer.
Virtual volunteers are needed to send messages of cheer that will brighten the day of care home residents. Simply write a note or send an image or short video (up to 20 seconds) of encouragement. Email your messages to mission@gss.org and the volunteer services staff at Good Samaritan will share it with residents.
The Edmonton Food Bank requires food delivery volunteers on Wednesday mornings. Since May 2020, the food bank has delivered food hampers to people who are disabled or otherwise unable to do their own errands. Drivers are reimbursed $10 per day for mileage. To learn more, please visit https://www.canavua.org/english.
Drivers are also needed for the Calgary Food Bank. To volunteer, contact the food bank or Jewish Family Services Calgary www.jfsc.org/support-jfsc/volunteer.html.
ElderDog is seeking people to foster dogs for seniors who are temporarily unable to care for their pets due to illness, injury, social isolation, etc. This non-profit also needs volunteers to assist with basic dog care so that seniors and their pets can stay together as long as possible. Volunteering usually involves dog walking, simple grooming, or delivering food provided by ElderDog. Visit www.elderdog.ca.
The Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS), which has facilities in Calgary and Edmonton, needs people to foster animals, fundraise, transport animals and materials, and help out at the shelter. For details, visit https://aarcs.ca/volunteer/.
