Celebrate Heart Month

CANADA – Exercising for as little as 75 minutes per week can add another 1.8 years to your life and that works out to approximately six minutes back in extended life for every one minute of exercise. Those encouraging statistics come from the Heart and Stroke Foundation, which also recommends a plant-focused diet, stress management, quality sleep and no smoking. February is Heart Month. For more tips and recipes to protect your cardiac health, download the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s free e-book: 100 Healthy Things You Can Do in Minutes.

Did you know that 8 in 10 cases of premature heart disease and stroke are preventable through healthy lifestyle behaviours? Track your personal fitness and risk factors online at www.heartandstroke.ca. The site also offers a 90-second CPR instructional video.

Aside from lifestyle factors, congenital heart defects and genetic conditions also put children and adults at risk. Each year, thousands of Canadians receive life-changing treatments developed with support from the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Until March 11, your donation to this charity will be double matched by Canadian Pacific.

Registration is now open for the Foundation’s Ride for Heart on June 5, 2022. Participants can bike, walk, or run, complete fun activity challenges, earn achievement badges and connect with other participants in a community forum.

If you prefer to create your own fundraiser, visit www.fundraiseyourway.ca for ideas and tools to set up a campaign.

The Red Cross is one of Canada’s oldest charities and has trained countless people in First Aid and CPR. If you have an old car taking up space on your property, the Red Cross can arrange to haul it away, then provide you with a tax receipt. (If you are upgrading to an electric model, many provincial governments offer additional rebates.) Please visit the www.redcross.ca where you will find information about Donate a Car and Car Heaven programs, an online donation form and fundraising ideas.
