CANADA – A Harvard study of their alumni in 2015 found that walking just 20 minutes (or 1.3 km) per day reduces the risk of fatal heart disease by up to 22 percent. February is Heart Month so try incorporating fitness into your regular routine by walking to do your errands, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or swapping your TV recliner for a stationary bike. The free self-assessment tools on the following websites can measure your fitness and personal risk factors for heart disease and stroke.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation (www.heartandstroke.ca) offers a handy tool to track your personal fitness, explains risk factors, and has a 90-second, easy to follow CPR instructional video with COVID-19 updates.

Every day, thousands of Canadians, including children with congenital heart defects, receive life-changing treatments developed with support from the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Recently, this charity funded research by Dr. Yu Tian Wang, who is working on drugs that could save your brain cells after a stroke, and Dr. Richard Swartz, who is conducting an international study to determine the cognitive impacts of COVID-19.

This month, your donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation is triple matched by Canadian Pacific. If you would like to run a virtual neighbourhood campaign, or launch your own fundraiser, check out their online tools and ideas.

For more than 30 years, the Cardiac Health Foundation of Canada has focused on cardiac rehabilitation and advocacy for disease prevention and education. Their website (www.cardiachealth.ca) offers a risk factor self-assessment, resources for people with heart disease, and, if you wish to fundraise, they can set up a digital campaign for you.

The Red Cross is one of Canada’s oldest charities and has trained countless people in First Aid and CPR. If you have an old car taking up space on your property, the Red Cross can arrange to haul it away, then provide you with a tax receipt. (If you are upgrading to an electric model, many provincial governments offer additional rebates.) Please visit the www.redcross.ca where you will find information about Donate a Car and Car Heaven programs, an online donation form and fundraising ideas.
