B.C. – For just $50 you could own original artwork and support the arts community. You can rediscover the joy of skiing by helping a disabled person learn new skills. You can protect wildlife and nature parks, sit on the Board of Directors for a cause you believe in, help someone in crisis, or connect the elderly to their families via the internet. Many charities are urgently in need of volunteers. In the spotlight this week are some of the opportunities in central B.C.

The Anonymous Art Show 2020 continues until October 9 with amazing artworks for sale online for just $50 each. This show is hosted by Arts Whistler and supports local artists.

Whistler Adaptive brings the joy of skiing to people with cognitive, sensory, or physical disabilities. Volunteers are needed for administration, event management, coaching, program delivery and fundraising.

The Allan Brooks Nature Centre in Vernon need volunteers for numerous roles including being Educational Assistant/Nature Interpreters; photographers; stewards, who learn about and assist with identifying and managing invasive species; and front desk and public event representatives.

The United Way of Southern Interior B.C. needs volunteers to sit on the Board of Directors, engage in the Community Investment application process (Community Impact teams), run workplace campaigns, and assist at special events.

KCR Community Resources in Kelowna seeks Crisis Line Responders. Volunteers will receive training and practice sessions to add to their natural ability to be good listeners who are compassionate. The next training sessions begin in January.

Eldernet in Kelowna is looking for patient Computer Mentors to help older adults learn how to use various technologies, such as a computer, iPad, or smart phone. Basic skills are taught on an individual basis and can cover using the internet, writing a document, learning how to print and more.
