Community Networking: Coastal B.C.

B.C. – This summer, expand your social and business networks as you try something new: volunteer at a Dragon Boat festival, kayak with kids, bike at Whistler, rescue wildlife, explore your love of history, or share your business expertise on a board of directors. The following are just some of the many charities and non-profit organizations urgently in need of assistance in the coastal B.C. region.

The Victoria Dragon Boat Festival is an annual celebration of sport, culture, and diversity. The festival society is seeking sponsors as well as volunteers to assist with the marshalling crew, stage management, raffle sales, etc. To learn more about this August event, visit https://victoriadragonboatfestival.com.

You can help disadvantaged youth enjoy kayaking at Long Lake this summer. Big Brothers Big Sisters in Nanaimo has partnered with the Nanaimo Canoe & Kayak Club to deliver this Play-On program in July and August. To volunteer, contact Cheryl at (250) 756-2447.

The Richmond Food Bank is seeking a Board Director. Each week, this food bank serves more than 2,200 people giving out an average of 20,000 pounds of food. Lend your leadership skills; sign up online: https://richmondfoodbank.org/volunteer.

Do you love biking in Whistler? Consider becoming a Bike Host and share your knowledge of Whistler’s extensive trail system with visitors. Contact Cathy (phone 604-935-8478) at the Village Host Program.

The Qualicum Beach Museum Society and the Parksville Museum are seeking volunteers to help locals and visitors appreciate the regional history. If you enjoy interacting with the public, or have skills in marketing and social media, sign up through the museum sites.

The Wildlife Rescue Association of British Columbia operates a wildlife hospital in Burnaby, which cares for thousands of animals each year. This rescue organization requires volunteers to transport and rescue animals as well as to assist at their facilities. Visit https://www.wildliferescue.ca/contact

In the event of a disaster or emergency, the City of Vancouver needs volunteers to provide backup communication. If you have an interest in short-wave radio, or are already a VECTOR member, apply through https://vectorradio.ca
