Planting Trees for a Cleaner Tomorrow

CANADA – All 13 Canadian provinces and territories were affected by wildfires this year and the area burned has surpassed anything ever recorded in our history. As of this publication date, 6,503 fires have burned across the nation destroying trees and damaging wildlife habitat on 45,714,496 acres, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre.
Corwin Kwan picked up a shovel and helped to plant trees in Mahon Park in North Vancouver as part of National Forest Week in September. He was one of more than a dozen volunteers who planted saplings along the top of a ravine to stabilize the bank and restore the area’s ecosystem.
“Tree planting is actually a fun event to do with a group of people, coworkers or even a family,” says Corwin. “It was a hands-on, educational event; we learned about the benefits of planting trees—from improving air quality to the many positive impacts on human health and well-being. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, release oxygen, filter pollutants from the air, and reduce the heat island effect.”
This year, more than 1,400 volunteers in 18 communities across Canada planted saplings on National Tree Day. The events were sponsored by the Bank of Montreal and organized by Tree Canada, a non-profit charitable organization that promotes tree-planting and other programs aimed at preserving nature. Corwin is planning to make National Tree Day an annual event and hopes that others in the real estate industry will join him next year. Members of the REALTORS Care® network are also using their social media platform to help spread the word and coordinate participation.
