Sky-high Logistics
Abbotsford, B.C. – The Abbotsford International Airshow (AIA) from August 11–13 will feature aerobatics and displays by the U.S. Airforce, the Royal Canadian Air Force and civilian organizations. The planes in the skies and on the tarmac will range from ultra modern to World War-era antiques. The airshow is expected to attract pilots and professionals from around the world as well as thousands of aviation enthusiasts.
Ken Welte, a REALTOR® with years of experience as a pilot and an academic, ground-school teacher for student pilots, will make the trip from Nanaimo to Abbotsford combining two of his two passions: aviation and emergency response volunteer work.
Ken will serve as the St. John Ambulance (SJA) Logistics Officer and his wife and business partner Laura will be the Administration Officer. Over the years, the couple have devoted countless hours to becoming skilled Search and Rescue providers and have completed many missions. Ken has also offered First Aid services at community events, and, in 2022, he became certified to drive a Mobile Post for SJA and obtained his Medical First Aid Responder certification.
This airshow requires up to 80 fully trained SJA volunteers to provide medical services to spectators, volunteers, and aircrews. Ken and Laura are contributing to a carefully coordinated effort that ensures SJA can respond rapidly in the event of a disaster. They are also managing volunteer needs such as food and shelter during the three-day event.
“Logistics is pre-planning and problem-solving and I enjoy working on the puzzle,” Ken says. “We have an awesome Team Lead… my superpower has always been my ability to find smarter and better qualified people to do the work.” All joking aside, Ken takes his role very seriously knowing that in an emergency, every second counts.
“This is a large team event that requires a lot of preplanning and focusing on member safety during the event. The competitive person in me wants to make sure that we have done the best possible job pre-planning to make the event go as smooth as possible.”
