Manitoba in the Spotlight

MB – During this pandemic, there are many safe ways to be a hero! Donate a used couch in good condition, buy a wine raffle ticket to aid abandoned animals, and help house people who lack shelter for many reasons including natural disasters and fire. If you have as little as two hours to spare you can make a real difference. In the spotlight this week are some of the organizations urgently in need of your help in Manitoba.

Brandon Housing First is looking for people to fundraise by hosting raffles or other safe events, donating professional services, and/or donating housewares such as dishes and kitchen utensils, chairs, couches, etc.

Barktender’s Bottle Delight Raffle hosted by the Manitoba Mutts Rescue Society is a fundraiser to support their foster program for pets who have been abandoned, abused, or surrendered through no fault of their own. Donations of wine are needed, and tickets are available for the Barktender’s Bottle Delight Raffle draw on December 5, 2020.

Wildfires, floods and earthquakes are some of the events that trigger a response from the Canadian Red Cross. Visit their website to find the latest details about how you can make a difference in emergencies, personal disasters and community health services: https://www.redcross.ca/volunteer/discover-volunteer-opportunities-for-you.

The Brandon Regional Health Centre relies on volunteers and currently, their requirements vary based on the pandemic situation. Please contact Barb, Manager of Volunteer Services, at volunteer@pmh-mb.ca with your interests and availability.

The MS Society of Canada needs phone volunteers who have experience with MS (personally or as a caregiver) to participate in their 1:1 Peer Support Program. Share your experience and lend an ear to someone who may be uncertain or struggling. Visit: https://mssociety.ca/support-services/ms-peer-support-program.

Main Street Project is holding their third annual Socktober campaign. The goal is to collect 20,000 pairs of new or gently used socks for shelter guests during the month of October. Please visit www.mainstreetproject.ca for a list of safe drop-off locations.

If you participate in these or any other projects, please contact Sutton Spirit by email lharrison@sutton.com or stories@suttonspirit.com. Share your news and inspire others!
