Manitoba in the Spotlight

MB – During this pandemic, there are many safe ways to be a hero! Be a zoo ambassador, grow vegetables for families in need, donate a used couch in good condition, foster an abandoned animal, and help people who lack shelter due to natural disasters and fire. If you have as little as two hours to spare you can make a real difference. In the spotlight this week are some of the organizations urgently in need of your help in Manitoba.

Do your best impression of Crocodile Dundee as a Park Ambassador for Assiniboine Park and Zoo located at 54 Zoo Drive in Winnipeg. Ambassadors provide basic information and news of the day to visitors, give directions, and share details on upcoming events and attractions. Learn more and apply online: www.assiniboinepark.ca/volunteer.

The City of Brandon has numerous community gardens and an urban farm that help to feed local families including food bank clients. To learn more about current volunteer opportunities, please email recreation@brandon.ca.

Brandon Housing First is looking for donations of gently used housewares such as couches, chairs, tables, dishes and kitchen utensils, etc. Another way to help is to fundraise with a contact-free event such as a raffle. For details, visit: www.brandonhousingfirst.ca.

Mutts Rescue Society is a foster-based rescue group that needs your help to bring dogs to adoption fairs or vet visits, assist at events, or provide a temporary foster home. To volunteer, email Natasha and Grace at recruit@manitobamutts.org.

Wildfires, floods and earthquakes are some of the events that trigger a response from the Canadian Red Cross. Visit their website to find the latest details about how you can make a difference in emergencies, personal disasters and community health services: https://www.redcross.ca/volunteer/discover-volunteer-opportunities-for-you.

The MS Society of Canada needs phone volunteers who have experience with MS (personally or as a caregiver) to participate in their 1:1 Peer Support Program. Share your experience and lend an ear to someone who may be uncertain or struggling. Visit: https://mssociety.ca/support-services/ms-peer-support-program.

Since 1957, A & O: Support Services for Older Adults has been providing specialized social services to older adults. Their Connect Program requires volunteers to chat on the phone with socially isolated older adults in Winnipeg. To learn more phone 204-956-6440.
