Nova Scotia in the Spotlight
NS – The Sutton community has helped to support frontline workers, rescue wildlife, protect the environment, feed the hungry and make life better for people facing a variety of challenges. The need is great, but the rewards are even greater for volunteers willing to share their skills, positivity and as little as two hours to improve lives. In the spotlight this week are charitable organizations with urgent requests in Nova Scotia.
Are you skilled in woodworking, metalworking or engineering? DesignAbility needs your help to create custom-built solutions for people with disabilities. This program is run by the March of Dimes, which was founded in 1949 to raise money for polio victims and to develop a vaccine. The organization now assists people will all types of physical disabilities by providing equipment, rehabilitation, job training and more.
Virtual volunteers are needed for a new Social Connect program offered by the March of Dimes. Social Connect provides interaction for individuals with physical disabilities, who are particularly isolated due to COVID-19. Volunteers connect digitally or over the phone for 30 to 60 minutes. To volunteer, visit www.marchofdimes.ca.
On Saturday, March 27, runners participated in the Night Owl 5K in Halifax to raise money for the Shelter Movers, a volunteer-powered charity that provides free moving and storage services to women and children fleeing abuse. Sign up now for the Blue Nose Races in November, or volunteer in one of many areas: fundraising, move coordination and logistics, volunteer management, marketing, policy development, and finance. The Canadian Cancer Society needs Volunteer Leaders to help plan their Relay for Life fundraising run. As a volunteer, you would participate in virtual committee meetings to help plan the event and coordinate volunteer support. To learn more visit www.cancer.ca.
Halifax Meals on Wheels delivers nutritious, tasty meals to people who are unable to prepare their own. Every weekday, this non-profit relies on volunteers to package meals from approximately 9–10 a.m., then runners and drivers make deliveries from 10 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Shifts are short, and organizers will accommodate real estate professionals who may have schedule changes due to appointments.
