Aid to Earthquake Victims in Turkey
Surrey, B.C. – A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Syria and southern and central Turkey (Türkiye). Nine hours later, there was another major quake followed by multiple aftershocks. In Turkey alone, more than 40,000 people have died and many more have lost their homes and livelihoods since February 6th.
Rami Hanna knew he had act before more lives were lost. He recently organized a collection of essential items to be flown to Turkey. Using social media, he reached out to his sphere of contacts to spread the word. He invited people to drop off ready-to-eat baby food, new tents, blankets, diapers, and cleaning supplies at the Sutton Premier Realty office.
“My car was stuffed as seen in the photo below,” says Rami, who was amazed and grateful to see the piles of donations grow so quickly. “It’s enough to fill a pallet like this one. It will be packaged then loaded on a cargo plane headed to Turkey.”
Why did Rami feel compelled to organize this donation drive and shipment to Turkey? Like most Canadians, he was saddened to see the devastation, but he also had a similar experience growing up in Iraq.
“I remember the terror I went through as a kid when I lived through a major earthquake. The Turkish kids I saw on the news were around the same age as I was when it happened to me. I knew what they were going through was even worse considering the magnitude of the earthquake.”
Rami is grateful to all the donors including his colleagues at Sutton Premier Realty who also helped to promote this urgent call for vital supplies.
