Realtors Aid Fire Victims

Halifax, NS – Halifax has been one of the communities hit hard by an early and unprecedented fire season in Canada. In late May, wildfire broke out in the city’s surrounding areas burning 160 homes and displacing residents, livestock, pets, and wildlife. Canadian REALTORS® are stepping up to help people cope with their losses and rebuild their lives.

REALTORS Care® (an initiative of the Canadian Real Estate Association) recently launched the Nova Scotia & Atlantic Canada Fires Appeal. Donations will go the Canadian Red Cross and will be matched by the Government of Canada and the Government of Nova Scotia effectively tripling the impact of each donation. Please visit www.realtorscare.ca.

Living in Halifax under a blanket of smoke, and hearing the stories of harrowing rescues, Edith (Edie) Hancock donated and encourages others to help if they can.

The ancestors of many Canadians have a connection to Halifax since nearly one million immigrants landed at Pier 21 from 1928 to 1971. The city is home to important landmarks and historical buildings, including the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts, where Edie volunteers.

“The Conservatory building was constructed in the early 1900s as a school,” says Edie. “During World War I, when a collision between allied ships caused the Halifax explosion, the building was used as an emergency facility.”

Today, the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts offers music and dance programs for children and music therapy for people of all ages. Edie has volunteered with the group since 2006 and currently serves on their Board.

Since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Edie has also opened her home to refugees. She has hosted two Ukrainian women—one for six months and another for two months. In addition to making a personal, positive impact, it’s been a rewarding experience that she recommends.

“We have fun sharing recipes and cooking together and I helped them with some of their documentation and practicing English. I will likely host another.”
