CANADA – This Valentine’s Day, send a little love to Canadians who need help during a difficult time. When you do, contact Sutton Spirit to share your good news and you will be entered into our next $100 draw on March 15, 2021. Need inspiration? Consider the following opportunities, some of which have a housing focus. From natural disasters to sick children in the hospital, our country needs heroes ready to make a real difference.

Each winter and spring, severe snowstorms and floods displace residents and the Canadian Red Cross steps up to provide shelter, food and clothing. This volunteer-based organization was founded in 1896 to provide disaster relief and humanitarian services. To volunteer or donate, please visit www.redcross.ca.

Make sweet memories as you pitch in with fellow volunteers to help build a home for a low-income family. Habitat for Humanity has projects in communities across Canada that rely on volunteers (no special skills required) and donations of building materials. Visit www.habitat.ca.

According to Food Banks Canada, by far, the biggest challenge faced by food banks since COVID-19 began in Canada a year ago, is a lack of volunteers to sort and distribute food. Learn more at www.foodbankscanada.ca.

FoodShare adds a cool factor to cooking, gardening and food rescue—they even have a bicycle blender! This organization teaches schoolchildren about nutrition, trains chefs and supports community kitchens, urban agriculture and food rescue efforts in the Toronto area. For details and to get involved, visit www.foodshare.net.

From the wilderness to the boardroom, Nature Conservancy of Canada’s Conservation Volunteers program engages people of all ages to protect our country's species and natural habitats. Until in-person events are safe again, this organization offers webinars, family outing ideas and virtual hikes through their site: www.natureconservancy.ca.

Celebrate the performing arts while you help sick children. The annual Vogue Charity Fashion Show is performed entirely by students from Queens University in Kingston and this year, proceeds benefit Almost Home. Visit www.voguecharityfashionshow.com.

If you participate in these or any other projects, please contact Sutton Spirit at lharrison@sutton.com or stories@suttonspirit.com. Share your news and inspire others!
