Doreen Lett - Ronald E. Sanderson Community Service Award Recipient

Mississauga, ON – The Ronald E. Sanderson Community Service Award is presented annually to a member of the Mississauga Real Estate Board who has demonstrated outstanding volunteer efforts, significantly impacting their community. Previous recipients have selflessly dedicated their time and expertise, expecting nothing in return, while meaningfully changing the lives of others.

Today, we spotlight Doreen Lett, who recently received the Ronald E. Sanderson Community Service Award, in recognition of her extraordinary contributions to Women's Habitat Shelter & Outreach Centre.

Women's Habitat is more than just a shelter; it is a lifeline for women and children fleeing violence. Established in 1978, it has been a sanctuary that has never seen an empty bed, always ready to provide refuge, counseling, and advocacy to those in need. Women's Habitat operates a 24/7 crisis line, offers shelter for about 25 women and children, and supports hundreds more through their Outreach Centre. In the past year alone, they have provided over 23,000 hours of counseling and served 984 clients through outreach services.

Doreen Lett's commitment to Women's Habitat is exemplified through the Holiday Tote Program, which she created five years ago to support the women and children at the shelter. The program invites community members to create themed holiday totes filled with essential items to assist in the day-to-day lives of the residents.

Through this program, Doreen has been instrumental in raising over $76,000 in the last five years in totes, gift cards, and financial donations for Women’s Habitat. Her efforts ensure that over 200 women each year receive a holiday tote, bringing joy and essential support during the holiday season. Doreen's home in Mississauga serves as the drop-off point for donations, and she even arranges pickups to make participation as convenient as possible.

"Receiving this award is an incredible honor, but the real reward is knowing that we are helping women and children feel safe and valued during the holiday season. I encourage everyone to get involved, whether it's by creating a tote or donating a gift card. Together, we can make a meaningful difference," says Doreen.

Doreen's efforts have significantly alleviated the challenges faced by Women's Habitat, especially in a year marked by fewer donations. The Ronald E. Sanderson Community Service Award is a testament to her dedication and the tangible difference she has made in the lives of so many women and children.
