Colin Zappia - Wilbert Keon Memorial Golf Tournament Charity Event

Ottawa, ON – On July 15th, 2024, the third annual Wilbert Keon Memorial Golf Tournament was held in support of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Participants, including Sutton Ottawa’s very own Colin Zappia, teed off at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club and raised an astounding $270,201 for critical cardiac care, research, and education.

Colin Zappia, a Board Member of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation, played a crucial role in organizing the tournament and achieving record-breaking donations. 

The annual tournament is held in memory of Dr. Wilbert Keon, who envisioned a Heart Institute that would provide the highest standard of cardiac care. Today, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute is a world-class institute and Canada’s leading cardiac health centre. This year, nearly 200 players, partners, and sponsors gathered to network, fundraise, and support Dr. Keon’s vision for unparalleled cardiac care.

Colin’s connection to the foundation began after his father, who was a patient at the Heart Institute, passed away from a heart attack in 2007. This loss fostered Colin’s desire to support the foundation. He started by donating a portion of his agent commission to the institute, eventually leading to his involvement on the foundation's committee. In 2019, a friend proposed a 24-hour indoor golf event, through which Colin raised almost $60K through personal fundraising and sponsorships. This success led to his invitation to join the golf committee and later, to become the chair of the tournament. 

Under Colin’s leadership, and with the collaboration of a dedicated committee of 14 community leaders, the tournament's fundraising efforts have soared from just over $190,000 to an impressive $270,000. 

In his pursuit to involve the next generation of donors, Colin introduced an annual pickleball tournament, fostering engagement and support among younger groups. His fresh approach ensures the tradition of giving continues to thrive.

“The biggest highlight is at the end of the day when you hand over the cheque to the President of the Heart Institute Foundation and see the smiles on all their faces,” says Colin, “Seeing the donations grow exponentially year over year is incredibly satisfying, knowing that you’re making a real impact”.
