Coldest Night Across Canada
CANADA – On Saturday, February 24th, thousands of people in 190 communities across the country will bundle up and walk alongside their neighbours to shine a light on the struggles of fellow Canadians who are hurt, hungry or homeless.
Since 2011, the Coldest Night of the Year has raised over $75,000,000 for numerous charities, including Habitat for Humanity, which builds houses for families in need.
Tina O'Brien, Broker of Record/Owner for Sutton Group - Quantum Realty Inc. in Oakville, Ontario, plans to support the Coldest Night of the Year, and invites other Sutton offices and REALTORS® to join her by donating or participating in their local 2 or 5-kilometre walk. Everyone is welcome and rest assured, this is not a race. Participants range in age from infants in strollers to fitness buffs and active seniors. The event is free to join although participants are encouraged to fundraise. There will be music, snacks, and warming centres. Adults who raise $150 or more and youth who raise at least $75 will receive a CNOY toque. The first 300 walkers who raise $500 will win a limited edition CNOY-branded hooded sweatshirt.
Best of all, funds remain in the community where the money was raised. It will be used to help build affordable housing, and provide emergency food, clothing, shelter, and other services to Canadians who lack secure housing.
According to the Homeless Hub, 150,000 to 300,000 Canadians are homeless at some point each year. This figure could be much higher as statisticians acknowledge that an unknown number of Canadians are considered the hidden homeless, since they move between temporary shelter with friends and family.
