Tree Planting in Surrey

Surrey, B.C. – When Corwin Kwan received an invitation to participate in a community tree planting event on October 8th, he and his wife Yvonne didn’t hesitate to roll up their sleeves and grab their shovels. They were among more than a dozen volunteers who assisted in this project at Chantrell Creek Park on 24th Avenue. The City of Surrey, with sponsorship from a local developer, organized the event and supplied the saplings.
As the trees grow, they will provide habitat for birds and other wildlife, create a beautiful natural space for visitors to enjoy, sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide, and help to reduce the urban heat island effect.
Corwin and Yvonne enjoyed pitching in and meeting their neighbours. “When we arrived, we received a quick introduction to the event. We picked up shovels and gloves and walked to the planting site. A staff member from the City of Surrey gave us instructions on how to plant, then off we went to select trees and start work.”
The organizers thanked the volunteered planters for their time and effort by having a DJ play music and by offering refreshments and mini donuts.
This project is just one of the many ways that Corwin gives back. For 28 years, he has volunteered with St. John Ambulance (SJA) providing First Aid at community events. He has also trained other SJA volunteers and was involved in setting up a temporary field hospital at the start of the pandemic.
Corwin also finds spontaneous, personal ways to give back. For example, he and Yvonne purchased more than 50 pizzas and delivered them to doctors and nurses at multiple hospitals in the Lower Mainland. This May, he handed out flowers at a local restaurant in celebration of Mother’s Day.
