Nurturing Future Leaders

Greater Vancouver Area – In the event of a natural disaster, it is essential that Canada has people who are trained in First Aid and disaster response. St. John Ambulance runs a youth program that provides 14- to 18-year-olds with the opportunity to learn lifesaving skills, volunteer in their communities, and foster their personal development.

When Corwin Kwan learned that St. John Ambulance was planning their first camp for the Non-Commissioned Officer Leadership Development Program (NCOLDP) since the beginning of the pandemic, he offered to volunteer as the cook—not an easy task with a camp full of 50 teenagers plus their instructors.

“I am super grateful that my family and camp staff were there to help out!”

During the event, which ran from March 12–14 at Camp Capilano, Corwin also celebrated his birthday. “I had two birthday cakes — one from my family and one from camp staff.”

Corwin enjoyed this leadership program when he was a young man. It inspired him to give back and allowed him to meet people and have a range of unique experiences. For nearly three decades, Corwin has volunteered with the non-profit providing First Aid at community events. He has also trained other volunteers and was involved in setting up a temporary field hospital at the start of the pandemic.

This successful Sutton REALTOR® recommends the program to interested youth. It has evolved over the years and Iku Yeh, Brigade Cadet Commissioner, notes that “The NCOLDP from thirty years ago is not what the NCOLDP looks like today…. We have progressed from classroom didactic learning to experiential learning in order to adapt to today’s youth.”

In his message to the camp participants, Commanding Officer Iku Yeh writes, “The NCOLDP is part of the youth program that provides a platform to experience levels of self development, challenges and failures.”
