Every Hero Needs a Visionary

North Vancouver, B.C. – A leukemia diagnosis is not uncommon in children, but Beckett Tessarolo is exceptional for a few reasons. He was only nine months old when he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in February 2020. His family was in shock and overwhelmed with tests and decisions. He was admitted to BC Children’s Hospital, and, for five long months, he received around-the-clock care and innovative treatments.

For the next 18 months, he underwent chemotherapy as an out-patient. Throughout the numerous hospital visits and endless lab tests, his parents were amazed that he remained a “strong, resilient, and sweet, smiling boy.” Now, one year after finishing his chemotherapy treatments, his family says that he is doing very well, although the diagnosis continues to have profound effects.

“Beckett's cancer diagnosis transformed our family—beyond the difficult days our family endured, we gained unbelievable perspective,” his parents say. “The experience also left us with immense gratitude to everyone who cared for Beckett along the way and motivates us to give back to this community. Our family directly benefited from the research and advancements made in treatment therapies and protocols.

“Today we are motivated to help others who are currently experiencing or will experience a life altering blood cancer diagnosis. We are so proud that the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) is recognizing Beckett as this year’s Honored Hero for the Visionary of the Year campaign. This amazing kid is a true rock star!”

Farhad Rahnamoon volunteers at LLSC and notes, “This charity is investing over $1M into pediatric oncology research this year and has launched the only Pediatric Blood Cancer Research Innovation Grant in all of Canada.

“My hope as a Leadership Team member of their Visionaries of the Year campaign is to inspire a member of Sutton to compete in the 10-week, Visionary of the Year campaign, which kicks off on Thursday March 23. Nationwide, we’ve recruited nearly 30 candidates and in the final days before campaign launch, I hope someone from Sutton will be inspired to action.
