Back in the Saddle

Vancouver, B.C. – From wildlife on the course to potential bombs in the bushes, the volunteers at last weekend’s BMO Vancouver Marathon guarded the safety of runners and bystanders. David Eng is a veteran of more than 90 events and typically serves as a route marshal. This past weekend, as a member of the Bike Team, he led the runners out of the starting gate and was also on the lookout for hazards and runners in distress. He was among the 200 volunteers who contributed to a memorable day for a record 18,500 runners and 90,000 spectators.

“It was so rewarding to see everyone enjoying themselves,” says David. “I love doing this. I would almost pay to take part! Another reward was being able to bike in places and in directions that are not usually allowed. For example, as I rode clockwise around Stanley Park, I saw a different view of the North Shore mountains. The vantage point of my hometown totally changes.”

In addition to cycling at the main event on Sunday, May 1, David volunteered at the Expo on Friday and was stationed at one of the course maps. “Some runners were from out of town, so they had questions about the terrain, especially uphill sections, and where would be good vantage points for their friends and families to take photos of them. I always enjoy meeting people and making a difference in my community.”

RUNVAN® organized the BMO Vancouver Marathon as well as three other runs since October: The Turkey Trot, Great Trek, and First Half. “RUNVAN® has done a great job of organizing these events and pulling them off in what I’d call adverse conditions because of COVID,” says David, who volunteered at all of them. “Until the mask mandate ended, they did it by having the runners wear masks in the starting block, which was also split into smaller waves. Likely these four runs have been the only major events we’ve had in Vancouver since the pandemic started.”

David estimates that he cycled 40–50 kilometers at the BMO Vancouver Marathon. It was only the fourth time this year that he rode his bicycle, but he keeps in shape by exercising at least four times per week. He goes to the gym, swims, hikes and snowshoes. He is looking forward to cycling at more runs and triathlons this year.

“We are always in need of volunteers, and there are many roles to suit different interests and abilities. If you would like to help, I’m happy to answer your questions.” To connect with David, please visit www.DavidEngHomes.com.
