Tournament to Fund Care for Wildlife
Kingston, ON – The Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre (SPWC) cared for a record number of animals during the pandemic and fielded thousands of calls for assistance. Now that spring is here, baby rabbits, squirrels, skunks, birds and turtles, as well as a few farm animals, including horses, are pushing the facility to its capacity. The costs to feed, shelter and provide medical care to approximately 5,000 animals each year are significant, but during COVID, Founder/Director Sue Meech was unable to hold any major fundraising events.
Your Grant Team is pleased to announce the return of the Charity Golf Tournament for the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre scheduled for Friday, June 24, 2022, at 1 p.m. at the Garrison Golf and Country Club. The fee is $125 per person, which includes a cart for two, green fees, access to all games and a delicious dinner with a choice of a steak, chicken, or vegan entrée. The tournament will be played as Best Ball.
To register, contact Your Grant Team members Rhonda Grant, Brandon Grant, and Jamie O'Leary by email: golf@yourgrantteam.com. They also welcome prizes and sponsorships.
There will be prizes for Hole-in-One, the Putting Contest, and the 50/50 draw as well as trophies for top mixed, ladies’ and men’s teams along with individual trophies for Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive.
With seven weeks until tee off, Rhonda notes, “This should give our golfers enough time in the spring to practice their swings and strokes before the big game!”
Other ways to help rehabilitate wildlife are volunteering or donating funds or items on the SPWC’s Wishlist at https://sandypineswildlife.org. The centre always needs food (e.g., lettuce, apples, almonds, pumpkin seeds, cranberries and oat bran).
In an episode of The Rhonda Grant Show podcast, Sue thanked the many volunteers who work at the centre and/or transport animals. “We have 200 volunteer drivers all over Ontario who will transport animals for us,” says Sue. “They pick up injured animals, but also transport to other centres. The animals are sent to wherever they can get the best care.” One example of this is sending baby owls to a specialized facility where they are paired with foster owl mothers, who will often bond with and feed the fragile little owlets.
