Song, Dance and Second Chances
Halifax, N.S. – Music and dance have a long and vibrant history in the Canadian Maritimes and Edith (Edie) Hancock, is helping to ensure it continues. On the board of the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts, she helps to promote music and dance programs for children (as young as six months) and adults. The Conservatory also offers music therapy to enhance the quality of life for people with physical and developmental challenges.
“I’ve been involved in the Conservatory for 16 years in one capacity or another. I’m currently on the Board of Governors and serve as President of Bravura Nova Scotia, which fundraises for scholarships and prizes with proceeds benefiting the Conservatory.”
For more than 130 years, the Conservatory has been fostering the arts in Halifax. Although their fundraising events are still restricted due to COVID-19, donations are welcome online https://maritimeconservatory.com and they are currently seeking new board members.
As an artist herself, Edie has donated some of her floral landscape and abstract oil paintings to fundraisers for the Conservatory.
Another exciting project is preparing her home to host a young Ukrainian refugee, who had to flee her home in Kyiv. Edie joins a long line of Nova Scotians who have welcomed those seeking a better life. The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 in Halifax is at the site where nearly one million immigrants landed from 1928 to 1971.
Edie joined the Halifax - Dartmouth Real Estate Board nearly 40 years ago. She has a genuine interest in supporting the health of her community. She found a unique way to do this many years ago, when she heard an ad on the radio seeking volunteers for conflict resolution. After a training program, she was a mediator for five years then served for five years on the board of the Youth Alternative Society, NS Department of Justice.
“I mediated conflicts between youth and their victims to make restitution. For example, if someone stole something from somebody’s garage, they might be able to do community work to avoid going to jail and getting a criminal record.”
